Apostle Islands Elopement Guide
Hello, fellow adventurers and hopeless romantics! I'm a Wisconsin-based elopement photographer with a passion for capturing the raw, intimate moments that unfold when lovebirds decide to tie the knot in nature's embrace. Today, I'm thrilled to share the enchanting experience of eloping at the Apostle Islands, a hidden gem tucked away in the heart of Lake Superior.
Nestled in the northern reaches of Wisconsin, the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is a breathtaking collection of 22 islands (21 that are part of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore plus Madeline Island), each with its own unique charm. As an elopement photographer, I've had the privilege of witnessing couples exchange vows against the backdrop of sea caves, windswept cliffs, and pristine beaches. The islands offer a sense of seclusion and natural beauty that is unparalleled β the perfect setting for an intimate celebration of love.
One of the joys of eloping at the Apostle Islands is the flexibility it provides for crafting a personalized celebration that reflects your unique love story. Whether you dream of an intimate ceremony on a secluded beach or an adventurous exchange of vows within the sea caves, these islands offer a variety of stunning locations to suit every couple's vision.
This guide will walk you through every step to having a perfect elopement in the Apostle Islands. I hope you find it helpful, and reach out for my advice on navigating this breathtaking place!
Getting There
Getting to the Apostle Islands is an adventure in itself, offering a road trip through the picturesque landscapes of northern Wisconsin. Here's a guide on how to reach this hidden gem:
By Car
From Duluth, Minnesota: If you're coming from the west, start your journey in Duluth, Minnesota. Take US-2 E, and then merge onto WI-13 S, leading you straight to Bayfield, the gateway to the Apostle Islands.
From Ashland, Wisconsin: If you're heading from the south, begin in Ashland, Wisconsin. Take US-2 W, then turn onto WI-13 S, guiding you to the charming town of Bayfield.
From Green Bay, Wisconsin: For those traveling from the southeast, start in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Take US-41 N to WI-29 W, and then merge onto WI-13 N. Continue until you reach Bayfield.
By Air
Duluth International Airport (DLH): The nearest major airport is Duluth International Airport in Minnesota. From there, you can rent a car and drive to the Apostle Islands, enjoying the scenic beauty along the way.
Central Wisconsin Airport (CWA): Another option is Central Wisconsin Airport in Mosinee, Wisconsin. It's a bit farther, but it offers car rental services for the journey to the Apostle Islands.
By Boat
Apostle Islands Cruise Service: Once you reach Bayfield, consider taking a ferry or cruise to explore the islands. Apostle Islands Cruise Service operates daily trips, providing a unique perspective of the sea caves and cliffs.
Private Charters: For a more intimate experience, you can also arrange private boat charters, allowing you to customize your island-hopping adventure.
Tips for the Journey
Check Weather Conditions: Northern Wisconsin can experience varied weather conditions, so check the forecast before your journey and pack accordingly.
Explore Bayfield: Before setting sail to the islands, take some time to explore Bayfield β a charming town with unique shops, cozy cafes, and a welcoming atmosphere.
After Arrival
Getting to any of the Islandβs besides Madeline island requires a kayak or motorboat. Most of the islands are 2-3 miles apart and island hopping is easy for an experienced sea kayaker. If you do not have a sea kayak, you can rent one, but without sea kayak experience I recommend doing a boat rental or using Apostle Islands Cruises to get dropped off at the island of your choice.

Madeline Island is the largest in the Apostles, and is the only island that is accessible by a car ferry. If you are looking for an actual venue for your elopement, then this is the island for you.
