How to Legally Elope in Wisconsin
Make Your Elopement Legal
As an elopement photographer, I have had the pleasure of capturing some truly intimate + beautiful elopements in good ol’ Wisconsin. There’s just a few things you should know to ensure that your elopement is both legal and memorable.
First, let's talk about the legal end of getting married in Wisconsin. In order to legally elope in Wisconsin, you will need to obtain a marriage license from any of the County Clerks Offices listed here. You and your hunny will need to apply in person, both with photo identification, proof of residency or citizenship, and the moolah for the license fee.
Once you have your marriage license in hand, you can get married anywhere in the state of Wisconsin! This means that you can plan your elopement ceremony in a location that has special meaning to you, at the park where yall first met, at the beach cause who doesn’t love sand in their toes, or in the middle of a wildflower field surrounded by your closest loved ones.
Things to Consider
Now that you know the legal requirements for eloping in Wisconsin, let's talk about the fun stuff!
Choose a meaningful location:
Choosing your location is one of the most important aspects of planning an elopement. Wisconsin has a wealth of stunning locations that are perfect for elopements, whether you prefer a natural setting like a state park or a more urban location like downtown Madison.
A few things to keep in mind when choosing your location,
*time of year — do you prefer the leaves changing in the Fall, the snow falling all around, or the sun gleaming and a warm breeze. I’m truly a sucker for it all!
*scenery — a wide open field with wildflowers all around, a forest of trees surrounding you, or the hustle and bustle of the city life passing by.
*sentimental value — what draws you to this place, how does it make you feel, where are you the most in your element?
Keep it simple:
One of the main advantages of eloping is that you can keep your ceremony and celebration simple + intimate. Focusing more on the love that brought you here and how yall can best celebrate that. Surrounded by your closest loved ones, soaking up the beauty of your surroundings and sharing this special day together.
Hire a professional photographer:
(aka me)
Hiring an elopement photographer that you vibe with is a must. I always do a coffee meet, or video chat with my couples so we can get to know each other to decide if we’re a good fit. Your elopement day is one where you want someone that’s able to capture the beauty and intimacy, while also telling your story through your photos. While being able to take beautiful photos that will be treasured for a lifetime, is important. Also being able to connect with my clients to give them the best of me is just as important.
Consider the weather:
Wisconsin weather can be unpredictable, so it's important to have a backup plan in case of rain, blizzard, or the craziness of all the seasons in one day. If you're planning an outdoor ceremony, renting a tent or indoor space as a backup location isn’t a bad idea.
Get creative with your vows:
One of the most special and personal aspects of an elopement is the exchange of vows. Take the time to get creative and raw in your vows, think of it as a love letter to your hunny. Whether it’s feelings straight from the heart, or a poem/reading that represents your relationship. Personalizing your vows can make your ceremony even more meaningful and memorable. And you’ll be sure to make me shed a few tears.

Eloping in Wisconsin can be a unique and unforgettable experience, and with a little planning and preparation, you can ensure that your elopement is both legal and unforgettable. Whether you're exchanging vows on a bluff overlooking the water or in a quiet wildflower field, Wisconsin offers beautiful locations for your elopement ceremony.
Packing the Essentials
Packing for an elopement can be a bit different than packing for a traditional wedding, as you'll likely be adventuring more into the outdoors and may have to transport your belongings to your ceremony location. Some items you may want on your elopement packing checklist:
Wedding attire: Well duh! While it might seem like the most obvious thing to pack, sometimes our brains are on autopilot so don’t forget the wedding dress or suit, along with any accessories like shoes, jewelry, and a veil.
Comfy shoes: Looking stylish on your elopement day is an obvious but if you're planning on hiking to your elopement location or spending a lot of time on your feet, make sure to pack comfy shoes!
Warm clothing: If you’re always cold like me, you’ll probably have a light jacket or sweater near by at all times. Cause even Wisco summer evenings can get a bit chilly.
Snacks and water: A little something to keep you fueled through the day!
Marriage license: Don't forget to pack your marriage license, as you'll need it to make your marriage official.
Emergency kit: If you’re an outdoorsy person, this is most likely already packed and ready!
Travel-sized mirror: For little touchups needed.
Of course pack anything you’ll need alongside these suggested items! I know my go bag is always changing depending on where I’m off to next.
Eloping in Wisconsin can make for a beautiful and intimate celebration surrounded by your closest loved ones in a special place. And I can’t wait to tag along to capture your love story!
